  from 1st of January 2008, Switzerland introduces a new foreign law. This foreign law is one of the most strict and taffest in Europe. In any case, it is quite difficult or even impossible to get a residence permit if you are not from EU/EFTA-country.
  
  Only if you are a very high-skilled professional or a scientist, which has recommendation of Swiss University or company, then your chances are not that bad.
  
  In any case else, even if you have enough financial means or relatives in Switzerland, it is very difficult to get even Visa for some short stay. Main criteria for rejecting foreigners is the so called "insurance of back journey", which means, that it must bet OBJECTIVLEY almost sure that you will leave the country after your stay (education or job). It is not enough that you ensure it, it is only then fulfilled, if the objective criterias are assuming that you will leave the country. So for most third World Country citizen, it is almost impossible to get a visa; only if you are very rich or are very talented, then you have a chance.

  Dear Dylan I saw your post on here. I am a South African but an EU citizen and live in Italy. As I have attached below the legislation got tougher in 2008.   Hi, I have been reading a lot of these posts and wonder if many of you are serious? Reason being, is that Switzerland is notorioulsy hard to get into if you simply don't have a great deal to offer to the country. What I man by this, is if you are not of a high calibre scientist or highly qualified and stand out from you peers in some fields then forget about it.
  
  
  I see so many postings from India and countries who are over populated but of standard qualifications. There are more tertiary educated people in India, than the whole population of Australia!
  
  As for the Nigerian posts, how many stupid people are there really in this world to believe someone from Nigeria, or in fact some of the African nations who say "please sponsor me to live a great life on your money and one day, you may just get it back, but really I plan to rip you off!"
